The Free Art Fair

Coinciding with the capital’s Frieze week, the Free Art Fair returns for the third and final time this year, promising to make its exit by means of an even bigger, better and momentous show.

The art fair that has been hailed as “the most radical departure from art fair commercialism”, a fun, no-budget event directly opposed to the money churning machine that is the contemporary art market, commences on Monday the 12th of October and is to be housed at the Barbican Centre in London.

Just some of the 50 names exhibiting at this years fair include: Marlene Dumas, Bob & Roberta Smith, Robin Mason, Harry Pye, Artists Anonymous, Rose Finn-Kelcey, Jimmy Conway-Dyer, Geraldine Swayne, Russell Herron and Phil Ashcroft. The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of performance art curated by artists and curators Lee Campbell and Frog Morris.

The Free Art Fair was founded in 2007 by contemporary artist, curator and writer Jasper Joffe. The aim of the fair was to divert public and  media attention away from the financial side of the art world, and back to the very essence and understanding of art itself… the act of creation and its appreciation. The Free Art Fair manages to challenge  the rules of the market and existing social divides light-heartedly. It offers entertainment, culture and collectorship to all, whilst simultaneously questioning the business ideologies of many.

How to get FREE ART – the instructions:

For your chance of owning a distinguished work of art from the Free Art Fair please visit the Free Art Fair’s website in order to download a registration form. This form must be completed and handed in to the Free Art Fair Team on the last day of the fair, Sunday the 18th of October. Free art will be given away with people drawn at random on the final day.

The winner of the competition will receive tickets to the fair for a day of their choice, as well as hotel accommodation + dinner for two in a London restaurant.

FRIEZE, located at 81 Rivington Street, London, is the Frieze Magazine, Frieze Art Fair and the Frieze Foundation. The Frieze Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which acts as the sole organiser and curator of the Frieze Art Fair programme. Each year the 4 long day event plays host to a dynamic and varied schedule, ranging from artist commissions, awards, talks, films, music and education. With over 150 galleries showcasing an array of the finest in international contemporary art; gallerists, critics, buyers and dealers liaising with one another; the art market revealing the latest in its financial trends; educators, students and artists all taking part, the fair continues to proliferate London as the crucial art hub that it is, and simultaneously reflect upon patterns from overseas.

FRAME:

This time in 3-D format – the Art Fair’s Sculpture Park is a real treat! Wander through the royal gardens and encounter works by names such as Louise Bourgeois, Paul McCarthy and Eva Rothschild. Organized by a group of collectors and businessmen headed by Enrique de Polanco, and directed by the previous manager of Spain’s chief photography show PhotoEspaña, Giulietta Speranza, the newcomer MFoto strives to further illuminate the medium of photography in international art fair circles, as well as to secure a Spanish base for its specialised niche market.

The fair takes place from the 7th through to the 10th of May 2009, and is housed in hall 6 of the Feria de Madrid (IFEMA), designed by Andrés Jaque architects. The MADRIDFOTO advisory committee comprising of Rafael Doctor (art critic and founder of MUSAC), Alberto Martín (curator and art critic for Babelia), Lorena Martínez de Corral (freelance curator and director of Expoactual) and Giulietta Speranza (Art Director of the fair), has selected over 40 galleries to exhibit at the event, showing the artwork of some 230 international artists.

MADRIDFOTO aims to become the meeting point for photography collectors worldwide, both private and institutional. Hailed as Japan’s “most substantial art fair”, Art Fair Tokyo will feature a myriad of high quality artwork, ranging across the mediums of modern painting, nihonga (Traditional Japanese style painting), antique and contemporary art. Housed at the Tokyo International Forum, this years fair is set to be the largest ever in the country, with over 140 galleries and some 3,000 artworks on show. Introducing an additional venue, the Marunouchi Tokia, to its establishment, the 2009 Tokyo art fair hopes to see a significant boost in its visitors and to break the 43,000 figure in its previous year.

Competitions: “Bacon Prize 2009” – Art Fair Tokyo and A.R.T Collection are hosting this years Bacon Art Prize, founded by Johnnie Walker, the Director of A.R.T. The Bacon Prize inherited its name from Walker’s Irish Wolfhound and “Tokyo’s art world mascot, Francis Bacon.”

The international success of Japanese contemporary art in the past has often depended on artists such as Takashi Murakami, Mariko Mori and Yoshitomo Nara selling a commercialised tourist image of Japanese popular culture to the world, a marketing tool homing in on the West’s “orientalist conceptions of Japanese-ness” (Tokyo Art Beat). Whilst such strategies continue to be effective and propagated by the Japanese government, there is, however, a hushed yet significant stir, revolt and rebellion in their wake. UCLA professor Adrian Favell speaks of the “post-bubble art” era, a new generation of budding artists “feeling their way towards beauty rather than junk”, breaking away from the “throwaway, plastic, mass-produced aesthetics and commercialism of the otaku generation”, and rejecting “its nationalist anxieties about cultural identity.” Free from the marketing doctrine of cultural category and stereotype, well travelled and “inspired by new technology, a sustainable and non-reproducible aesthetic”, Japan’s contemporary artists have “finished absorbing the lessons of American and European modernity, and now sit as an alternative to both the West and (Chinese) East.” (Tokyo Art Beat).  A number of names within the Japanese contemporary art scene to look out for: Tomoo Gokita, Tabaimo, Naoya Hatakeyama, Tatsuo Miyajima and Izumi Kato. 101TOKYO

A direct product and stimulating testament to Japan’s burgeoning art scene, the 101 Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair is but one new international arts platform through which global art interests are temporarily diverted away from the West and Japan’s biggest neighbouring competitor, China, to its very own shores of Nippon-koku.

101TOKYO is the only international contemporary art fair in Japan chosen by a selection committee. Now in its second year running the fair will be bringing together a lineup of Japanese and International art galleries to its venue, the Akihabara’s UDX building, representing the very best in emerging and contemporary art. Commencing on Thursday the 2nd of April, 101 Tokyo will coincide with Art Fair Tokyo and a number of other exciting art events in the city.

The AIPAD Photography Show New York is the longest-running and premier exposition of fine art photography. Art Paris 09 is deemed to be more international and more contemporary than ever! 115 galleries from all around the world are currently exhibiting under the vast glass cupola of the exhibition hall, showcasing the very best art works of the 20th and the 21st Centuries. There is a specialised and newly reinforced ‘Contemporary Photography’ section; as well as the hosting of the 2nd Prize for Contemporary Drawing of the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Foundation taking place.

With one third of the galleries coming from outside of France, fourteen countries are represented in total. Europe figures in the first place with France (78 galleries), Italy (7 galleries), Belgium (6 galleries), Germany (5 galleries), Switzerland (4 galleries), Hungary (2 galleries), Luxembourg (2 galleries), Austria (1 gallery), Spain (1 gallery), Great Britain (1 gallery) and Monaco (1 gallery). Asia is also present with three galleries making the trajectory from China.

Street Art at the Grand Palace?
At the crossroads of Free Figuration and street art: Hervé di Rosa meets Jonone…
For artparis 09, Serge Malik – designer, producer and editor of contemporary art – has commissioned large format works of the two renowned artists, Jonone and Hervé di Rosa, for a comprehensive exhibition of original works at the Grand Palais, with the support of the Fonds Municipal d’Art Contemporain et de la Direction des Affaires Culturelles de la Ville de Paris.

Jonone – An outstanding figure of French street art, real name: John Andrew Perello.
Hervé di Rosa – one of the founders of Free Figuration – named by Ben Vautier to designate a movement that was born in France in the 1980’s in reaction to the formalism of ambient conceptual art. To see more on Figuration Libre please see here.

Evening events:
“ARTPARIS by night” (les Nuits d’ARTPARIS) – On each evening, throughout the duration of the fair (March 19 to 22), the captivating and elegant mezzanine of the Grand Palais will be transformed into an ephemeral restaurant, bar and lounge. “Lovers of art and of Parisian lifestyle are invited to join the participants at ARTPARIS – collectors, artists and gallerists – under this music filled canopy of 500 square meters, set to the sounds of a guest DJ. This presents a wonderful occasion to extend the pleasure of meetings and avid discussions under the sign of art, for a drink, for dinner or for a party in an unusually enchanted place, so arty…”
