Kinetica Art Fair 2009

February 27, 2009

Tonight sees the opening of the first kinetic art fair to take place in London.

Developed by Kinetica Museum, in partnership with P3, and supported by the Contemporary Art Society, the Kinetica Art Fair promises to deliver a superabundance of cybernetics, man-animal-machine hybrids, mechanical drawing machines, subliminal installations, pole dancing robots, light sculptures and the such.

Over 30 galleries and organisations specialising in kinetic, electronic and new media art are taking part, and more than 150 artists will be exhibiting.

With world renowned artists’ names such as Daniel Chadwick, Chris Levine, Jason Bruges, Martin Richman and Tim Lewis taking part, and a host of special events, screenings, tours, talks, and workshops on offer, the fair aims to create a platform for the commercial enterprise of this field, as well as to familiarise collectors, curators, museums and the public with its key players.

Jasia Reichardt, art historian and curator of Cybernetic Serendipity, the first UK exhibition of computer and kinetic art, held at the ICA in 1968, says the fair “will be beautiful. Everything will be moving. This is something that can be enjoyed by art lovers, children and computer geeks alike.”

So to grab a piece of the action and witness a “very moving experience”, as described by Colin Gleadell of The Telegraph, make your way down to the 14 000 square ft former concrete construction hall for the University of Westminster’s School of Engineering, the P3’s space.

The fair opens at 10 pm tonight, with a spectacular performance by Seth Riskin, a former U.S. national champion gymnast, “whose movements create light effects extending and protruding from his body”. Acclaimed international artist collective body>data>space follow, presenting a world premiere of performers interacting with light and visual projections.
