Greece’s leading international art fair for contemporary art, ART-ATHINA, is back in Athens this month, commencing on Thursday the 21st of May. Now in its 15th edition, Art Athina is under new management, that of Alexandros J. Stanas and  D.ART, a not-for-profit organisation whose main aim is to develop a strong contemporary art scene in Greece. ART-ATHINA – the International Contemporary Art Fair of Athens – was founded in 1993 by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association and has since become one of Europe’s most established art fairs. Staying true to its year long legacy, ART ATHINA No 15 is showcasing the work of over 300 artists and 60 galleries from around the world. The fair is housed in the Faliro Pavilion, a former Olympic Games venue, which is situated on the very shoreline of Greece’s most ancient and grandiose of cities.

Adding to the programme of the main fair, ART ATHINA organisers have collaborated with the likes of Vangelis Ioakimidis (Director of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography), Jean-Pierre Giusto (ex-Director of the Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image), Paolo Colombo and the Benaki Museum, to bring to their visitors a further selection of expositions to see whilst there.

10 Aspects of Hellenic Photography – Contemporary Creation (Organised by: A co-production of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and the Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image.) The exhibition will showcase around 100 photographic works by emerging Greek artists.

Performance festival OPA 0.2 (On Performance Art) – a fifteen day festival of live performance, educational activities, film screenings, talks, discussions and more. The OPA international performance festival is now in its second year running. This years programme explores the term of ‘postproduction’ as suggested by French curator and art critic Nicolas Bourriaud. Venues: TaeKwonDo & Bios

In Praise of Shadows – curated by Paolo Colombo – an exhibition comparing the traditions of shadow theatre and the new narrative spirit in contemporary art. It is organised by the Benaki Museum in collaboration with the Hellenic Festival, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and Ιstanbul Modern. Venue: Benaki Museum, May 22 – July 26
